Trading Commodities Is Not Easy
The general public probably thinks that most commodity brokers are experts at trading and they make profits routinely every year. In reality, that is not the case. In fact, most commodity brokers do not consistently make money for their clients, but they can make a nice living off the commissions.
It normally takes most people several years to gain enough trading experience along with extensive research and market study to become consistently profitable traders. It is ambitious but often naïve for a new commodity broker with no market experience to believe he or she can consistently make money for clients from day one.
Learn How To Trade Commodities
I personally believe that commodity brokers should be able to prove that they can trade successfully before they start making trading recommendations for their clients. However, an aspiring commodity broker only has to pass the Series 3 Exam and pass a background check in order to become a commodity broker. But there is some good for those who can trade commodities well.
A commodity broker who can consistently make money for his or her clients should have a bright future as long as he or she can also open accounts. Therefore, I would highly recommend that an aspiring or current commodity broker read as many commodity trading books as possible and get some trading experience.
Reading and studying about trading commodities lays the groundwork that you need to trade successfully. The real work comes with actual trading experience where your own money is at risk. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have trading experience. This is the only way you will really learn how good you are and you learn from your mistakes.
Some commodity brokerage firms will have a research department that makes trade recommendations and may even have someone who advises the brokers one what type of trades to make everyday. This can be a good arrangement for a broker who wants to strictly concentrate on sales. However, if you aspire to ever be a true commodity broker who trades for a living, you must learn how to trade successfully.
